Should you wear a helmet when doing snow sports?

The short answer is a resounding, YES!

Doing any snow sport from snowboarding to skiing carries a high risk of falling, which can result in concussion or other head injuries. While beginners should definitely wear a helmet, advanced skiers or snowboarders might decide to make the choice based on their own skill level. And while this is obviously a personal choice, simply because they are a more experienced rider doesn’t negate the fact that one slam can result in serious trauma. And one that could be life changing too.

It could be one fall, one collision, one misjudged side hit and you could find yourself being airlifted to the nearest hospital. And that ain’t fun. Or cheap.

Those expecting to hit the snow park should definitely make sure to wear a helmet, due to the increased risk of slamming into the deck.

Why do skiers/snowboarders not wear a helmet?

There are many reasons why snowboarders or skiers avoid wearing a helmet on the mountain. Most often it is a style choice. In some circles, helmets are seen as uncool or unstylish. Similarly it can be a peer based choice. If your riding buddies aren’t wearing a helmet you’re less likely to wear one yourself.

Whatever the reason, if you feel you need to wear a helmet, you definitely should.

Don’t be afraid to buck the trend and take care of your own safety, especially if you’re planning to hit the park, ride unfamiliar terrain or head off-piste.

A helmet doesn’t even have to be an expensive purchase. You can pick up a good quality ski or snowboard helmet for relatively little money both at resort supply stores and online.
